Ben’s parents’ visit

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

I haven’t written a blog entry in a few days because Ben’s mom and dad came to visit last weekend. It was a fantastic time. We visited the Museum of Natural History at the University of Utah campus, ate scones/coffee at Tulie Bakery near my old apartment, and enjoyed dinner at our favorite restaurant in SLC, Kyoto. Dave and Mary Jo helped me and Ben get settled into our new apartment. Dave installed new wall lights (sconces) for our bedroom. He (with the help of Comcast) also fixed our cable TV so now we can watch 150 channels on the free TV our friend Thomas gave us. We spent several hours at Sears and the mall getting new tired put on our car (Leslie, the Lumina) and purchased a brand new grill with 3 burners which cost $117 (including tax). Ben and I have eaten nearly every meal from this grill since Sunday afternoon. We made brats, bison burgers, steak, and mushroom kabobs. Looking forward to trying more exotic grill-able foods such as venison, lamb, brisket, ribs, corn, potatoes, chicken, onions and peppers.
During my parents’ in law’s visit, I did not watch too much TV–only a new episode of Modern Family and Big Bang Theory. I recently finished a new episode of Switched at Birth, which I am enjoying and yesterday evening, I watched 3 episodes (not the whole thing but I tuned in sporadically) of Top Chef (on Bravo)–the real TV episodes, not the Hulu version. It was weird because I couldn’t pause whenever I wanted to and watch more later. I got the jist of each show and learned the main points so that was all that was necessary. I also washed lots of dishes and cleaned up moving boxes while Ben took his bike to the gas station to get air in his tires. This morning, he biked to work for the first time. Very exciting! This morning, I judged a science fair in a neighboring city (Bountiful) and enjoyed talking with several (20+) 5th and 6th graders. Tonight, I am very tired and planning on enjoying a new episode of Good Wife by myself, while Ben showers and watches Badger basketball. We are truly enjoying our new home. The fireplace, patio (with grill!) and clean, modern kitchen, bathroom, living area. Great location–we can even bike to work without needing to chug up a big hill. Here are some photos from our weekend.

Joshua’s graduation ceremony

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Congratulations to my brother, Joshua, for graduating from UCLA law school. I was privileged to attend his graduation ceremony and help him move from his apartment in LA back to my parents’ new home in Northern California.

My mom, dad, Uncle Cory and cousin Daniel also attended his graduation. We enjoyed a long ceremony where my bro was “hooded”, signifying his receiving his Juris Doctorate (JD) degree. Now, my brother has to study for the bar exam in July.

Below are photos of my family at UCLA. My mom, dad, and Uncle Cory stayed with cousin Daniel and his family in Irvine. I will miss visiting my bro in Westwood as LA is one of my favorite cities in the US (along with Chicago and New York City).

One more week in Baltimore… then I’m moving to SLC!!!!

Here are some of my mom’s photos from Mother’s Day celebration with my grandparents and Uncle Cory’s family.

Grandpa’s grave

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Goodbye.

Friday, March 4th, 2011

My grandfather passed away yesterday at the age of 85. He lived a long and full life and left behind a loving, spirited wife, four healthy, successful sons and daughters-in-law, and 7 grandchildren. I remember my grandpa steaming man tou buns at my house in Richardson, Texas. I know he took care of me when I was a baby and crossed the Pacific Ocean to visit as often as possible during my youth. The last time I was able to see my grandpa was in 2007 when I got to introduce him to my husband, Ben. I feel very blessed that my grandpa lived long enough to see me become a successful young woman, celebrate my graduation from college and know that I had found my life partner. Since he lived in Taiwan, I didn’t spend too much time with him, especially in recent years, but I knew that he loved me, prayed for me and thought of me. Besides happy memories of my visits with him, I will always carry with me his physical presence. My stature (height, size) resembles my dad’s parents more than any other family member. To honor my grandfather’s memory, I plan to eat a tasty Chinese meal the next time I go visit Ben in Salt Lake City.  While I cannot celebrate Grandpa’s long life with my family in Taiwan next weekend at the funeral, I will take some time to remember how much my grandpa enjoyed good food and good times with his family and friends. I think I have inherited his whole-hearted enjoyment of God’s bountiful riches.

Thanksgiving in Madison, WI

Saturday, November 27th, 2010

Ben and I were fortunate to get to spend Thanksgiving Day with his parents and extended family in Madison, WI. We enjoyed a huge turkey dinner with gravy, stuffing, sweet potato pie, mashed potatoes, gluten-free corn casserole, rice pudding, apple sauce jello, seven-layer salad, green bean casserole, canned cranberry sauce and special Thanksgiving wine (and two different white wines: a Riesling and Wollersheim’s Prairie Fume). Did I mention the two types of pies for dessert: blueberry and pumpkin–with homemade whipped cream? We were stuffed (and very sleepy) on our train ride back to Chicago on Thursday night. Good thing we both ran 3.1 miles on Friday morning to burn off some of the calories we consumed :) Now we are both back to working and writing in our respective cities (Chicago and Baltimore) and looking forward to Christmas.

My first kayak experience

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Twas a good one. I managed to only flip the kayak over once (when I was docking it at shore). Will try again in the future… perhaps in Utah!

Ben and Dave enjoy fishing.
